Termites

Table of Contents

Termites are social so they’re going to live in communities with thousands of other termites. These social creatures work together to ensure that the colony can thrive and survive. Whether they’re searching for food, building tunnels, or building new nests, they’ll work together to achieve these goals. There are several colony members, including soldiers and workers. Termites survive by eating cellulose. Although it is found in plants, it can also be found in lumber, paper, and other materials.

If the problem isn’t rectified, the termites will quickly destroy your home. Termites product mounds when the termites have outgrown their colony. When the underground nest is overloaded, termites will spread out by building termite mounds. Some termites burrow in wood as well. If you have termites, you will be able to find mud tubes around your home. Termites build mud tubes to ensure that they can gain access to food sources.

Although there are other termite species, the Subterranean termite species is most common. These termites cause most of the damage in the United States. These termites cause nearly $2 million in damage to American structures each year.

Termite Classifications

Termite colonies are home to thousands of termites. Each termite fits into a specific classification. Below, you’ll learn more about termite classifications.

Queens

Queen termites are larger than all of the termites in the colony. They’re a little under 4-inch in length. The queen cannot move through the tunnel without assistance. Hundreds of worker termites need to push the queen to move her through the colony’s tunnels. During her lifetime, queen termites will produce and lay thousands of eggs.

On average, she can lay 30,000 eggs during her lifetime.

Kings

King termites are constantly working with queen termites to produce more termites for the colony. The couple is integral during the early days of the colony. However, the king and queen will continue working together to produce more termites during their lives.

Worker Termites

Worker termites have soft bodies. They are light and grow up to 10mm in length. Workers are always busy. They never stop working. In general, they can work 24 hours a day. They serve many purposes, including feeding other termites, grooming other termites, and building tunnels.

Soldier Termites

Soldier termites serve the purpose of protecting the colony from invaders. They’re roughly the same length as worker termites, but they have long heads and powerful jaws. They use this combination to fight off invaders such as ants.

Winged Swarmers

Winged reproductive termites include male and female termites. These termites are produced during summer to ensure that they can spread the colony to new locations. They develop wings and fly away from their colony. When they do that, they can fly away from the colony and build nests elsewhere. A termite colony typically has many winged reproductive termites. It will only have one queen and one king

Types Of Termites In Cleveland

Cleveland residents may encounter a handful of termite species. However, the most common and destructive is the Subterranean termite. These termites can be found in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and across the United States.

About

Subterranean termites are similar to other termite species. These termites live in groups with unique classifications. For instance, you’re going to find termites that are workers and soldiers. A Subterranean termite colony also has a king, queen, and swarmers. Worker and soldier termites grow up to 3/8th of an inch. The primary difference is that soldier termites have longer heads and stronger jaws. As for swarmers, they can reach half an inch.

Behavior

What do Subterranean termites do? In general, these termites live in underground nests. Alternatively, they can live above ground as long as the area is moist. When attempting to safely reach food, they’ll build and use mud tubes. Doing so allows them to reach the food without being attacked by predators. Subterranean termites consume cellulose which can be found in lumber and other products. During the spring months, swarmer termites are produced so they can build new colonies elsewhere.

Problems

Unfortunately, Subterranean termites create numerous problems. The biggest problem is that these termites will destroy your home. They chew through wood to consume cellulose. Fix the problem or you’re going to let your home be destroyed.

Comparing Flying Termites & Flying Ants

It is a good idea to learn more about flying termites and flying ants. Their wings are much different. If the wings are of identical size, you’re dealing with flying termites. If the waist is pinched, it is likely a flying ant. As for the antennas, flying ants have elbowed antennas.

Common Facts About Termites

  • Termites will never stop consuming wood. The lumber supporting your home contains cellulose. As a result, termites eat wood 24 hours each day.
  • A colony can survive a long time. The colony can survive as long as 70 years. Take care of the problem rapidly or it will worsen.
  • A termite colony can house as many as half a million termites.
  • Although destructive, termites are helpful in some cases. They will destroy deadwood so they’re helpful in the environment.
  • Subterranean termites cannot live unless they have access to water. If they dry out, they’re going to die.
  • Termites live in mud tunnels above ground. To do so, they’re going to keep the tunnels wet.
  • Ants often attack termites and their colonies. When termites are searching for food, they may be attacked by ants.

  • Alaska is the only state that doesn’t have these destructive termites.
  • Worker termites are the only colony member that can chew and eat digest. Once they’ve done that, they’re going to regurgitate the cellulose and feed it to other members.
  • Queen termites survive as long as 20 years and lay thousands of eggs in just 24 hours.

Termite Dangers

How dangerous are termites? On one hand, they’re not dangerous at all. Termites do not attack humans. They won’t bite or transmit illnesses. However, they create other problems.
